"Since the pre-vaccine era, there has been a more than 99% decrease in mumps cases in the United States", the CDC said.

According to The Texas Department of State Health Services, the state is witnessing a 20-year-high in mumps cases.

Multiple outbreaks include possible exposures on South Padre Island.

"Mumps cases potentially linked to South Padre Island first came to light this week when another state health department contacted [the Department of State health Services] about a patient with mumps who had traveled to the area for spring break", the department said.

There have been 13 cases of people who traveled to South Padre Island between March 8 and March 22.

Garfield County Public Health confirms they are investigating four reported mumps cases in residents of the county. A year ago the USA had multiple outbreaks of the mumps resulting in 5,748 total reported cases.

Mumps is transmitted from person to person by respiratory droplets or saliva. That far exceeds the 17 cases reported in 2016.

"When you think about mumps, most people will do OK, but there are potentially more serious complications", noted Dr. Cynthia Brownfield, a physician with Mosaic Life Care. Two doses of the vaccine are 88 percent effective at protecting against mumps; one dose is 78 percent effect, according to the CDC. Hardesty said, "Take precautions, get your immunizations, and make sure they're up to date".

Mumps is highly contagious.

Mumps symptoms include swollen or tender salivary glands, swollen or tender testicles, low fever, tiredness and muscle aches. For example, in Texas, 97.6% of kindergarten-age children have received two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine, Van Deusen said, while 98.7% of seventh-graders have.

Mumps is a viral infection that causes painful swelling in the glands of the cheek and jaw. Meaning, to cover mouth when coughing or sneezing, to avoid sharing foods and drinks and to wash hands frequently with water and soap.

The CDC recommends that children get two doses of the MMR vaccine.

Roberts said the best preventative measure is to get vaccinated, and one mother is taking that advice seriously. "Still, I'm capable of passing it on to someone else", Schaffner said.
