US President Donald Trump visits Jerusalem Monday to seek ways to achieve Israeli-Palestinian peace, a goal that has eluded his predecessors but which he says could be easier than "people have thought".

Trump, his wife Melania, and a 900-person delegation, including senior administration officials, business executives and security personnel, will arrive Monday for a two-day visit to Israel and the Palestinian West Bank.

"Palestinians are ready to reach for peace", Trump said.

"I assure you of our commitment to the two-state solution and to live together with our neighbors in security and peace", Abbas said.

Having insisted that he was capable of striking the "ultimate deal" for peace between Palestinians and Israelis, Trump made no mention of a two-state solution, which has always been considered internationally as the preferred solution but which Israel's right-wing government has publicly begun to shy away from.

Trump's two-day visit will include separate meetings with Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Days before the United States president starts a Middle East trip that includes meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leaders, Tillerson told NBC channel that Trump's decision would depend greatly on how it is seen by governments in the region, including "whether Israel views it as being helpful to a peace initiative or perhaps a distraction".

Trump, who prides himself as a first-rate dealmaker, has called peace between Israel and the Palestinians the "ultimate deal".

"We wanted to come straight to the holiest place in the entire Jewish world, the 'Kotel Hamaaravi, ' the Western Wall, straight from the airport", Friedman said.

Trump visited the Western Wall in the Old City - in the city's eastern sector, captured by Israel in 1967 - but would not agree to allow Netanyahu to accompany him.

Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner landed in a second plane and sat with the American diplomatic delegation during the welcome ceremony.

"There is no other way", he said.

Israeli officials appear to be growing increasingly nervous over Trump's visit, when he is expected to make an attempt at re-launching long-stalled peace talks with the Palestinians.

The president will discuss bilateral relations and Israeli-Palestinian conflict with both leaders separately.

In a speech on regional peace on Monday, Trump said after meeting Arab leaders on his trip to Saudi Arabia, he believes that "a new level of partnership is possible and will happen".

He will need to cross Israel's West Bank separation wall, which will eventually extend some 700 kilometers to separate Israel and Palestinian territories.

Iran's foreign minister accused Trump of using foreign policy as an excuse for selling billions of dollars' worth of weapons to Saudi Arabia, its longtime foe.
