The Republican-led Senate has confirmed President Donald Trump's pick to be USA ambassador to China, sending Terry Branstad from the governor's office in Iowa to the American Embassy in Beijing.

"I never in my life expected this would happen", Branstad told reporters during the last weekly news conference he held in a career that began with his first gubernatorial election win in 1982 and blossomed into the longest stint of any state chief executive in USA history.

As the longest-serving governor in the more than 22 years, Branstad oversaw Iowa throughout the farm crisis of the 1980s that brought financial ruin to many farmers and during the Great Flood of 1993 that inundated communities throughout the Midwest.

He said Lt. Gov. Reynolds has his full support now and in the future.

"In this state we grew up learning the value of the dollar and not to waste it, a lesson I intend to apply every day as your Governor", said Reynolds in her speech in Des Moines. "These activities have directly impacted USA corn sales by helping us build trade relationships with our global customers", said Hora, a Washington, Iowa, corn farmer. He was at the helm of Iowa's state government from 1983-1999, and again since 2011. She succeeds Branstad, who was sworn in the same day as USA ambassador to China.

Reynolds announced that she had made a decision on whether or not she would appoint someone to the position last week, but did not disclose details on her decision.

Kim Reynolds speaks after being sworn in as governor during a ceremonial swearing in, Wednesday, May 24, 2017, at the Statehouse in Des Moines, Iowa.

Branstad is the longest-serving governor in US history and has been presented with the Lifetime Champion of Renewable Fuels award by the Iowa Renewable Fuels Assn. As Branstad's longevity in office showed, Iowa has no term limits.

Upmeyer said she has worked with Reynolds on many policy initiatives and is confident in Reynolds' ability. Individuals also circled around an upper floor to view the historic event from the railings.

I want to express my most honest congratulations to Governor Reynolds. He will then be sworn in as ambassador by U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Steven Colloton.

Reynolds, Iowa's 43rd governor, is Iowa's first female in the position, and said she plans to be a roll model for those to follow - but she said she wants to be more than that. She will be sworn in by Iowa Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Cady.

Branstad, 70, is the longest-serving Governor in the US. Senate Democratic Leader Rob Hogg said he is eager to see whether Reynolds does things differently.
