Chasing his first PGA Tour victory, unheralded American Daniel Summerhays carded a 68 to soar to 13 under, pouncing on spectacular collapse from overnight leader Jason Dufner (77).

Dufner compounded his misery by driving into a water hazard at the last for a closing bogey, finishing the day tied for third at nine-under with compatriots Bubba Watson (68) and Justin Thomas (69). Other Australians to make the weekend included Matt Griffin (71, two over) and rookie Curtis Luck (70, three over).

Birdies in three of his final five holes saw Dufner move to 14 under and beat the previous halfway best at the tournament by a shot. He ended his back nine with a pair of bogeys, then finished in style with four birdies over his last five holes. "I had so many good looks at birdie".

Dufner also came to 18 with a chance at 64 before carding his only bogey of the day. "He wobbled from the get-go, squaring four straight bogeys on holes 2-5, three on failed scrambles and a 3-putt at the fifth from 12'10", before getting on the board with birdie-4 at seven from 5'0". "Legitimately from the first hole to the 18th hole, there's a double bogey somewhere in there".

"I caught some breaks when I missed the fairway and still had some fairly good opportunities from the rough", Lingmerth said.
